Using the homeassistant mqtt broker addon

The emoncms home assistant addon has got its own broker but many home assistant users prefer to go through the official Mosquitto broker addon, because they use the mqtt data to execute actions on their home, such as switch on the lights, open or close the shutters

The emoncms addon is able to use that official broker, which needs no configuration at all. Please note it will be available on the local IP, here 192.168.1.7 through port 1883.

Once the broker addon is started, you should see this kind of message in its log :

You have to create a specific user in home assistant, let's call it mqtt_broker

For that, go to Settings > People > ADD PERSON. Define a password, check Local access only if you want to secure things a bit :

The next step is to activate the mqtt integration in home assistant

Go to Settings > Devices & services > ADD INTEGRATION

Then search for MQTT

And fill the broker options.....

Now your broker is fully integrated into home assistant !

So, if you are a long time emoncms user, new to home assistant and familiar to receive all your datas in emoncms, you don't need the official Mosquitto broker. The broker included in the emoncms addon is enough. I am pretty sure you can use it for your future automation tasks...

If you are a home assistant user new to emoncms, and want to keep your regular broker, you can do it.

Now you can adapt the emoncms addon conf.

Make sure MQTT_HOST contains the correct IP, use mqtt_broker for MQTT_USER and fill the MQTT_PASSWORD. As 1883 is the default mqtt port for the emoncms addon, there is nothing to specify for the mqtt port.

It's time to save and restart the addon

All sensors publishing to the Mosquitto broker addon on topic emon should now be received as emoncms inputs !
