Editting a sent message always gets stuck in selevtion mode

Editing a message that's already been sent is permanently stuck in text selection mode. Like when your editing any text on Android and long press in the text, you get tow cursors appearing that you can drag around to select text.

Choosing the Edit option for a previously sent message makes the text inline editable, but if you try to tap a point in the text to edit a specific word, it always switches into selection mode with end cursor stuck at the end of the message.
Trying to drag the end cursor always immediately resets it to the end of the message again, all you can successfully move is the start cursor Any typing you do overwrites all the selected text, just like you'd expect in selection mode.

Clicking into the empty new message box removes the selection state from the message being edited, but tapping a location in the message being edited again (usually but not always) goes back into selection mode within that text again.

I've tried with multiple different keyboards to be sure, and I've verified no other app is experiencing this.

I am able to reproduce this. It's a newer problem and it's affecting me a few times a day.
