This effort started from discussions at the first University of California Open Summit (UC Open 2025). We propose a small percentage-based contribution (~0.1% of direct costs) from research grants to create sustainable funding for the open-source tools that power modern science.

The Problem

Research software is breaking. Critical tools that millions of researchers depend on operate without sustainable funding. The loss of just 1-2 key maintainers could collapse entire research ecosystems.

Our Solution

Just 0.1% of grant funding can solve this crisis through systematic, usage-based distribution to maintain the software researchers actually use.
