Reminders for Tasks

[fossterer]

Hi @patrickunterwegs ,

I setup 'Spectacled Tasks' on Android. Do we not support reminders?

I created a task last night at around 8:57 PM. Being unable to find a way to set a reminder, I took chance with 'Due' set for 9 PM.

No notification fired off at 9 PM. I'm wondering if the option to set reminder for tasks is present somewhere else.

Thanks

Hi @fossterer ,

This isn't implemented yet.
I need to figure out two things first:

• use a library for notifications or do the actual implementations for the platforms
• how alarms should be handled in general

The second one is the more complex thing.
The iCalendar standard has a dedicated VAlarm component, this would allow a lot of flexibility, but also adds a lot of complexity:

• multiple alarms cane be added
• alarms can have a relative and an absolute date and time
• when relative, it can depend on the start or due date and must be updated accordingly when the dates change

In jtx Board I tried to take all that into account. But for spectacled I would rather simplify this and only trigger alarms on start our on due, maybe with a global setting...

For Alarms:

Simple vs Multiple: I prefer the JTX Board's way of Multiple Alarms. This is akin to Google Calendar's way with 'Events'. In Google Calendar, one can have a notification sent 5 minutes before, 30 min. before and even 4 weeks before. User can choose these individual pieces (4, weeks). Let me know your thoughts

Relative vs Absolute: I'd have said to go with Absolute as Google Keep does but that makes the Start and Due ineffective. Let's think of this flow -

• 'Due Time' is mandatory to set 'Alarm'.
• All Alarms are Relative to Due Time. That way, when we consider recurring Alarms in the future, the calculation becomes straightforward
• 'Start Date' is not mandatory. While setting an alarm, if a Start Date is found, user gets a Warning but not an Error, if the alarm falls outside the Start - Due range.

Here, I am seeing Spectacled Tasks not as Google Calendar. You don't use Tasks to record how long an event lasts. Rather it is a place to keep reminders to you that something is due.
