Whose application is it, anyway? Building products for everyone in the UK health and care system

Abstract

In the last ten years there has been an explosion in the number of ways to easily bring data science products to a wider audience. Typically a data scientist will build an application for a specific customer by prototyping and refining what they produce using customer feedback.
But what happens when you're building something that you think has wide application but you don't have a relationship with every type of user yet and won't until the work is in a more complete state? What happens when you have a model or some code with multiple analytical groups working with it, borrowing and improving the modelling code and making their own applications on top of the existing code?

This talk describes the first stages of bringing the disciplines of product and delivery to the work of a data science team and other allied analytical teams. The discipline of product has helped us to see our work through the eyes of users and to refine and extend our models and their interfaces to serve the needs of a diverse set of users. The discipline of delivery has helped us to respond flexibly and with agility, understanding and incorporating the work of other analysts and data scientists, maximising collaborative work and minimising duplication.

You will leave the talk with a practical understanding of how to apply these lessons in your own work, whether you're leading a team of fifty or working on solo projects.
