this fixes tests that are broken because an array is expected.
methods must have started to return symbols instead of strings at some
point.
Tests aren't working for me because I it looks like there's an issue
with rspec 2 on ruby >= 1.9.3, specifically
rspec/rspec-core#258.

I want to try upgrading directly to rspec 3, but who knows how hard that
will end up being.
this uses the encase container, is a better way to handle state than
keeping everything global

for now, not going to really use it for much, but will refactor to it as
possible/necessary
