An existing-provider update previously changed options and initialization state before preparing replacement artifacts, and a failed download could remove the live provider directory. Updates now prepare every requested installation binary in an owned staging tree before publishing. Download, checksum, archive and preparation-cancellation failures preserve the installed provider and its workspace associations. Publication failures attempt synchronous restoration; failed restoration retains recovery artifacts and reports their location. Cleanup failure after a completed publication warns while preserving the successful result. This does not promise crash atomicity, concurrent-reader isolation or rollback of later provider initialization.

Preparation confines archive extraction, independently copies installed files and sidecars, and detaches selected aliases before writing. Reused and replaced binaries receive a final checksum check. Absolute references into the managed tree are checked only after preparation against their final lexical target in staging, including a newly created target or an in-tree link that is itself replaced; true outside references remain untouched. Cross-boundary aliases that resolve into managed binaries are rejected explicitly when their future traversal cannot be safely projected, including alternate-case paths on case-insensitive filesystems. Direct downloads and cache hits temporarily grant write permission only to the owned staged parent directories they need, restoring the exact modes before publication. Archive fallback restores those leases before replacing a family, preserving fresh archive modes. GNU sparse tar members remain supported: the standard tar reader expands their data into the same confined file writer used for regular files.

Regression coverage includes failure preservation, cancellation, offline reuse, partial multi-binary preparation, contained archive links and sidecars, read-only destinations, managed absolute-reference conflicts and case aliases, owned daemon state, and publication/restoration failures. The focused Windows job discovers every compiled test root in the provider-update, confined archive and metadata test families, then requires each root and every observed subtest to start and pass without skips. POSIX permission and case-sensitive filesystem limits remain explicit. Go 1.26.9 supplies the Windows junction-confinement security patch; the narrow confined metadata adapter and archive separator conversion address the separately reproduced Windows failures. Go caching is retained on Windows as well as Linux and macOS. The Windows build job allows 45 minutes and the focused Windows provider-test job allows 30 minutes so cold compilation and post-job cache saving can complete; the tests retain their 10-minute command timeout.

Validation: old-code failures and fixed-code passes cover both staged-parent permissions and final managed-alias checksums. Fresh affected-package uncached race tests, vet, module verification, Windows cross-compilation, strict lint with zero issues, all applicable hooks and formatting/diff checks passed. The branch integrates the merged compatibility suite and retains the shared thirteen-suite/74-case native catalogue. Its required Windows job derives coverage from native Go test discovery and JSON lifecycle events, with package-qualified identities and no duplicate test-name registry. It rejects empty discovery, missing roots, incomplete runs and every skip/failure, including newly added subtests. The helper retains the exact Go test exit status in its artifact; go run supplies the workflow failure status. Local capability detection remains consistent with the other symlink fixtures; a capability skip still fails the required Windows CI guard.

The GPG reverse-forward unit fixture now verifies closure of its exact owned TCP listener after managed completion. Its previous global port-rebind probe could report another listener as a leaked forward; a controlled sentinel reproduction demonstrates that false positive. The forwarding lifecycle and independent user-forward assertion remain intact. The corrected test passed 100 race-enabled repetitions, the full command package race test and vet, Windows cross-compilation, strict lint and scoped hooks. The original CI port owner remains unknown.

The sparse-archive regression now checks expanded executable and sidecar bytes on every platform, with exact Unix modes on POSIX and Windows' writable-file mode projection on Windows. Both sparse tests belong to the automatically discovered Windows suite. This repairs a valid Greptile portability finding without changing extraction behavior, cache settings or deadlines.

The confined tar writer also preserves contiguous regular files (tar.TypeCont), which the preceding legacy extractor supported. A real tar-parser regression verifies contiguous executable and sidecar headers, legacy extraction, confined contents, finalization and platform-appropriate modes. The exact fixture fails on the old classifier and passes after the narrow regular-file case addition. The contiguous-file regression also belongs to the automatically discovered Windows suite. Metadata, links and directories retain their existing handling; device and FIFO entries remain rejected.

CI orchestration delegates the Windows provider-test command and its JSON coverage guard to the Go utility in hack/provider_update_ci. The MicroSandbox job uses the Go utility in hack/microsandbox for checksum-pinned runtime installation, execution, log capture, managed-policy selection and report validation. The Linux build job provides the latter as a CI-only executable; it is excluded from release packaging. The superseded PowerShell, shell and Python helper implementations are removed. The workflow retains its declarative catalogue, dependencies, Go/runtime cache policy, deadlines and evidence uploads, including all automatically discovered Windows-applicable cases and all thirteen MicroSandbox suites/74 expected native cases. The Windows helper runs directly with go run, removing its separate build step. The MicroSandbox binary remains shared by the thirteen Linux runner jobs.

The full PR changes forty-one files, including the existing report validator and its tests replaced by Go files. Relevant provider/workspace/extract race tests, vet, module verification, Windows cross-compilation and TypeCont counterfactual validation remain current. Fresh helper race tests exercise command failures, missing/skipped discovered cases, output draining, retained artifacts, checksum rejection, managed fixture selection and failure-status precedence. Both utilities pass vet; native Linux and Windows helper cross-builds pass. The Go report validator also accepts all thirteen retained real native-suite reports, proving schema compatibility rather than execution of this new head. Fresh strict lint reports zero issues. All applicable scoped hooks passed. Current head 3cfd899 passed all 85 applicable implementation CI jobs on its first attempt, all 74 actual VM scenarios (37 builtin/37 external against published provider0.1.8), and all 42 discovered Windows roots/84 tests and subtests without skips. Both Go helper unit-test packages also passed on Windows. Full current-run reports, logs and synthetic-merge provenance were inspected independently. Fresh Greptile reviewed this head at 5/5 with no blocking issue. Completed full remote CodeRabbit reported no actionable finding, minimal merge risk and low security architecture risk. Its full review selected 40 changed files; a separate explicit exact-head review covered the excluded 110-line mise.lock and found no actionable issue, completing coverage of all 41 changed files. All actionable threads are resolved. Full local CodeRabbit remains temporarily waived because its service failed to start, as explicitly authorized; no local CodeRabbit coverage is claimed for this head. Final-head Greptile and remote CodeRabbit coverage are complete; the temporary local-service waiver is not a claim of local CodeRabbit coverage.

The Windows coverage guard has no per-test allowlist or skip exception registry. Five tests that require POSIX permission enforcement now live behind !windows build constraints, preserving their Unix assertions and root-user skips. Every remaining selected Windows test/subtest must pass, so missing symlink privileges or unexpected filesystem skips fail visibly. New helper regression fixtures cover empty/missing-package discovery, missing roots, cross-package name collisions and newly added skipped subtests. Actual local go run execution discovered 46 roots and verified 97 total tests/subtests on macOS, all passing without skips; this is host-side orchestration evidence, not Windows or VM execution proof.

Linux-installer filesystem tests are scoped to non-Windows hosts because they assert POSIX executable/library modes and symlink installation. Portable runner, report and CLI tests remain compiled on Windows; the runner's exit-status fixture uses the native Windows command interpreter rather than requiring a POSIX shell. The existing Windows job also runs both Go helper unit-test packages before provider conformance, covering this platform boundary directly without adding a job or changing caching/deadlines.

The pinned runtime installer removes a cached archive after a checksum mismatch and removes partial bytes after a failed download, preserving the original error and reporting cleanup failure. The current invocation still fails; a later invocation can download the pinned artifact afresh. Deterministic old-fail/new-pass tests exercise both recovery paths and subsequent successful installation. The runtime pin, checksum, validation assertions, caching policy and deadlines remain unchanged.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 3cfd8

Provider updates now prepare and check binaries in a staging area before replacing installed ones, and the CI helpers move into Go. No concrete defect was established in this change, so it looks ready to merge after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3cfd8

Staged preparation improves installation preservation and confines replacement writes. No introduced security defect was established in the reviewed paths. Remaining uncertainty concerns the privileged CI environment; publication also remains explicitly non-atomic across crashes.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — Provider publication targets the selected provider’s binaries and manifest plus its configuration options and initialization flag. Separately, CI executes the test binary through sudo with selected GitHub identity/token and Kubernetes/container environment values. Effective downstream credential authority is not established by the inspected source.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The sudo execution and credential-forwarding boundary predates this PR. The helper retains the baseline test command and selected environment forwarding; comparison does not establish an introduced privilege expansion. The unresolved effective token scope and runner-environment provenance remain coverage gaps, not verified vulnerabilities.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Downloaded archive names are checked for absolute paths and parent escapes, materialization uses os.Root, unsupported entry types are rejected, and extracted symlinks are validated before finalization. Installed regular files are independently copied into staging rather than shared through hard links.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Temporary write permissions are recorded only for staged directory parents and restored in reverse order. Archive-cache fallback restores these permissions before replacing the family, preventing old leases from altering fresh archive directories. Recovery retention bypasses disposable-stage cleanup.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make CI token permissions and trusted Kubernetes/container endpoint provenance explicit so the privileged test process’s maximum external authority can be assessed without relying on inherited defaults. This is hardening of an existing boundary, not a finding introduced by this PR.

@coderabbitai Please provide supplemental code-review coverage for mise.lock at exact head 3cfd899ebcce5ff197fcb4bc24ccd352a4d0c75f, which the completed full review excluded through !**/*.lock. This is a focused review of the excluded file, not a new full-review request. Please inspect the entire current file and exact PR diff below, consistency with mise.toml/go.mod Go 1.26.9, and the two official Go distribution URLs and SHA-256 values. Report any actionable correctness, security or reproducibility concern, or explicitly confirm no actionable issue for this file/head. Do not change files or settings.

The primary independently compared both hashes against official Go release metadata; both match. That check does not substitute for your review. Only Go version/specifiers and its two platform URLs/checksums change; other tool records are unchanged.

@skevetter Supplemental review complete. No actionable correctness, security, or reproducibility issue found in mise.lock at head 3cfd899ebcce5ff197fcb4bc24ccd352a4d0c75f.

I inspected the entire 110-line file and independently reproduced the supplied PR diff.

  • Version consistency: The Go version and specifier are 1.26.9. Both match mise.toml and the go.mod directive.
  • Platform consistency: All seven tool records cover exactly the configured linux-x64 and macos-arm64 platforms. Their specifiers match mise.toml. Node 24.21.0 satisfies the 24 specifier.
  • Go distribution verification: Both URLs use the official dl.google.com/go/ host and the correct platform archive names. Both returned HTTP 200. Their reported sizes match official Go release metadata.
  • Checksum verification: I independently compared both SHA-256 values with official Go release metadata. Both match exactly:
    • Linux amd64: 42d158b4d8f7b61ac0a830567c940a86098fb7aac52e467a5ebec03ef5cc2f8d
    • macOS arm64: f9bb7c0a02506c5d9bf0d1eb1f7ee6c7684f844ae49558308a0427b830e022cc
  • Diff scope: Only the Go version, specifier, URLs, and checksums changed. All non-Go records remain unchanged. The file parses as valid TOML, and all checksum fields have valid SHA-256 syntax.

This was a focused file review, not a new full review. I did not download and hash the archive bodies or run tool installation. No files or settings were changed.

Final-head review dispositions for 3cfd899: the completed full CodeRabbit review reports no actionable finding, minimal merge risk and low security architecture risk. The lockfile excluded by its path filter received a separate explicit exact-head review in 6167496919, with no correctness, security or reproducibility issue. Together these cover the full 41-file PR.

The retained CI hardening proposal concerns an existing boundary: comparison with pre-PR main confirms the Go wrapper passes the same explicit GitHub/Kubernetes/container environment as the former sudo command, with no sudo -E, new token source or job-permission expansion. Effective downstream token authority and endpoint provenance remain separately tracked campaign hardening questions; this disposition does not claim those are proven. Crash-atomic publication remains explicitly outside the documented contract.

The docstring-coverage warning is advisory rather than a repository requirement. Private helpers and tests keep descriptive names and behavior-focused tests; adding comments that repeat implementation solely for the metric would conflict with the requested self-documenting style. No significant valid unresolved review issue remains.
