`Unknown build hook: jupyter-builder` when using `hatch==1.16.0`

Hello, I am not sure if this issue belongs to here or to hatch, but anyhow I though it would be useful to report.

I use jupyter-builder to build the javascript part of my ITables package.

This works well up to hatch==1.15.1, see e.g. this run: https://github.com/mwouts/itables/actions/runs/19534600623/job/55925566346

However hatch==1.16.0 was released recently and the corresponding action started to fail: https://github.com/mwouts/itables/actions/runs/19734050718/job/56541651631

Forcing hatch<1.16.0 fixes the issue: https://github.com/mwouts/itables/actions/runs/19798073304/job/56721277341, so I'll do this for now.

Let me know if I should report this on the hatch issue tracker instead.

Thanks @mwouts for the report. I moved the issue to the related repo (the names are a bit confusing).

We noticed another issue with the latest hatch in jupyter-server/jupyter_releaser#624, but this one seems different.

Would need to check if there is something new to handle here, or if hatch will release a new patch version with a potential fix.

Just noticed the same error with hatch==1.16.2 in the notebook repo (jupyter/notebook#7780), which also explicitly call hatch build on CI: https://github.com/jupyter/notebook/actions/runs/20040188031/job/57471948388?pr=7780

This change appears to have been introduced in pypa/hatch#2073.

Related upstream issue in hatch: pypa/hatch#2110.

Looks like the following should help fix the issue:

 [build-system]
 requires = [
     "hatchling>=1.11",
+    "hatch-jupyter-builder>=0.5",
 ]
 build-backend = "hatchling.build"

Environment type plugins are now no longer expected to support a pseudo-build environment as any environment now may be used for building. The following methods have been removed: build_environment, build_environment_exists, run_builder, construct_build_command

Build environments can now be configured, the default build environment is hatch-build
