2026-10-28: Let's raise a PR to fix this. @mozesl-nokia will raise a PR.

Upstream package check bug

• Bug:Porch doesn't check that target upstream, upstream from, and the upstream to are the same package.
• We shouldn't need to provide all three references over the API, you should only need the target PR and the new upgrade.
• Maybe we can fix this in v1alpha2
• We should reject upgrades when the upstream package name is different on old/new/target
• @liamfallon to write a bug report on this
  2026-10-28: Issue was opened: On Upgrade API calls, Porch does not validate the package references in the upgrage request porch#1308

Move the kpt CLI to a separate module

2026-10-21:

• See Extract the kpt CLI into it's own go module #4811
• This change modularises kpt in a better way, the kpt library is the base module and the CLI is a "sub" module
• This complicates releasing
• Should we lock the releases? kpt API/CLI/lib

Improvements to kpt release using goreleaser

2026-10-21:

• The release process is complicated now that we will have 3 modules in kpt
• We should describe how we can use goreleaser to simplify the release process @mozesl-nokia has opened (Proposal: Lock the kpt module versions together with automated releases #4827)

Local git cache

2026-10-28:

• POC: Local Git Cache on shared PVC porch#1331 @rendre-greyling
• A full checkout of the git repo is preformed on local storage
• Only works on v1alpha2 (because v1alpha2 stores the metadata in CRs)
• Demo presented by @rendre-greyling
• PR is in draft for now, comments are welcome
• DB is not required wth this cache type
• To come: interface to isolate go git so that libgit could be used instead
• Reads towards PRRs in the same git repo, are they locked?
• Lock is only on writes
• This first PR is to prove the viability of creating a local git cache prior to introduction of libgit
• Should PVCs be used and how should PVCs be deployed
• PVC is shared across all shards, because we can't shard the API server
• Listing of PRRs is still in Porch but it is of course very slow
• Listing from the DB will be faster than listing off git
• System use cases should be gracefully handled, such as returning a list PRRs with an empty list so that k8s internals such as garbage collection work OK
• PVCs working across shards in a multinode cluster with sharding could be tricky
• This replaces the CR cache if you don't want to deal with the database
• Experimental for now, test it with sharding
• Test it with libgit
• So far 10,000 PRs seems fine (with small PRs), we would like to push this to 1,000,000 PRs
• PRR gets are served from this cache and DB storage is replaced with this
• See feat(v1alpha2): add PRRStore content architecture porch#1312, for proposed PRRStore content architecture
• Can we collaborate on this,
• we have our PRRs in the DB as in feat(v1alpha2): add PRRStore content architecture porch#1312
• We can have our PRRs stored like this
• Push on every commit is bad for performance, but pushing only on render would be much better
• Storing PRRs similarly to how Git stores them in the DB. The storage is very inefficient, but is another topic
• lockfies: what if a process claims a lockfile and then the process dies? Needs to be considered, should be a 30s timeout
• Having gogit or libgit could be usable on either DB/CR/PVC version of PRR storage

• Can we deprecate the CR Cache? The only reason to keep it is because CR cache works on v1alpha1.
