Very cool project but why not using idiomatic lua tables?

Using premake for small project and find it very cool but call everything as function with easy to mess up scopes drives me nuts. What's behind this decision?
Instead idiomatic lua code like this:

premake6 will go more in that direction if I understand correctly.

Is premake6 still being developed? I notice the v6 branch has not had commits for 3 years now

I know I'm not doing any active work on it. I've been busy with other work and with getting Premake 5 ready for full release instead of continually releasing betas.
