Summary

Fixes the security issues in the aptitude questions endpoint reported in #2375.

Changes

  • Require authentication before generating aptitude questions.
  • Apply IP-based and user-based AI rate limiting.
  • Validate topic input, reject invalid characters, and limit topics to 100 characters.
  • Limit the question cache to 500 entries and evict an entry before adding a new one when the cache is full.
  • Add regression tests for authentication middleware, topic validation, and cache limits.

Testing

  • Added security tests for the aptitude questions endpoint.
  • Added a cache-limit regression test covering 501 unique topics.
  • Full backend test suite: 24 test files passed, 259 tests passed.

Closes #2375

Secures GET /api/questions with authentication and AI rate limiting. The route trims topics and rejects blank values, topics over 100 characters, and topics containing control characters, <, or >.

The route uses the cleaned topic for cache keys and prompt generation. The cache holds up to 500 entries and evicts an entry when full.

Adds tests for route middleware, topic validation, and cache limits.

📝 Walkthrough

The aptitude questions route now applies AI rate limiting and authentication, validates and trims topics before generation, and limits its cache to 500 keys. New unit tests cover middleware order, topic validation, and cache behavior.

Changes: Aptitude Questions Route Controls

Layer / File(s) Summary
Route access and topic validation
backend/routes/AptitudeQuestions.js, backend/tests/aptitudeQuestions.security.unit.test.js
The route applies global AI rate limiting, authentication, and per-user AI rate limiting. It trims topics and rejects blank, over-100-character, or invalid-character values. The prompt uses the trimmed topic. Tests cover middleware order and topic validation responses.
Bounded question cache
backend/routes/AptitudeQuestions.js, backend/tests/aptitudeQuestions.cacheLimit.unit.test.js
The cache is limited to 500 keys. Before inserting a new key when full, the route deletes the first listed key. A test checks responses for 501 unique topics and confirms the final topic is cached.

The new access controls can lock legitimate users out of the questions endpoint when unauthenticated traffic shares their IP. Reorder the middleware and handle the full-cache overwrite case before merging; the validation gaps are smaller follow-ups.

Explanation

The reviewed changes are limited to the aptitude questions route and its security and cache regression tests. Authentication, rate limiting, topic validation, cache-key normalization, and cache eviction directly implement issue #2375.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #2375 remains partially unmet. The route now uses generalLimiter at mount time, aiLimiter, protect, and aiUserLimiter. It trims and limits topics, rejects blank values, control characters, DEL, and angle brackets, normalizes the cache key, and bounds the cache at 500 entries. The added tests cover middleware order, topic validation, and cache eviction. However, AptitudeQuestions.js does not reject excessive punctuation. A topic such as !!! passes validation. No test covers this requirement.

Resolution

Add validation for excessive punctuation in backend/routes/AptitudeQuestions.js. Add a regression test that confirms an excessively punctuated topic returns the invalid-character response.

- Around line 86-87: Update the cache insertion flow in the question-generation
handler so a concurrent request that finds cacheKey already present returns the
cached value instead of calling set() at capacity. Alternatively, ensure space
is made before every set(), including when the key already exists.
- Line 31: Update the sanitizedTopic validation to reject Unicode control
characters and line or paragraph separators using the Cc, Zl, and Zp categories,
and impose a punctuation limit that still permits normal topics. Add tests
confirming U+2028 and U+2029 are rejected.
- Line 18: Update the middleware order in the router.get handler so protect runs
before aiLimiter, ensuring unauthenticated requests do not consume the shared IP
allowance; keep aiUserLimiter after aiLimiter.
