Principal AI Scientist

We are seeking an exceptional Principal AI Scientist to drive our research-to-product innovation pipeline. In this critical role, you will lead our efforts to identify, develop, and implement cutting-edge AI technologies that advance Gaia's mission of democratizing access to personalized AI. You will bridge the gap between theoretical research and practical implementation, working closely with the CTO to bring breakthrough ideas to market while mentoring our technical team.
The Principal AI Scientist will serve as the technical visionary who transforms research into shipped products:
- Lead AI research initiatives that align with Gaia's strategic vision, identifying novel approaches to enhance our decentralized AI infrastructure
- Design and architect AI systems that can be effectively implemented within our blockchain-based infrastructure
- Collaborate with engineering teams to translate research concepts into production-ready features
- Work closely with the CTO to evaluate emerging technologies and determine strategic research directions
- Establish methodologies for evaluating model performance, efficiency, and security in decentralized environments
- Create technical specifications and architectural designs for new AI capabilities
- Mentor junior researchers and engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and technical excellence
- Represent Gaia's technical vision at conferences, in publications, and with partners
- Develop processes and systems that streamline the research-to-production pipeline
- PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or related field, or equivalent practical experience
- 5-8 years of commercial experience in AI/ML research and development, with a proven track record of shipping AI products
- Deep expertise in large language models, reinforcement learning, and/or multimodal AI systems
- Experience with blockchain technologies or decentralized systems
- Strong publication record or demonstrable contributions to the field of AI
- Proven ability to translate complex research concepts into practical implementations
- Experience mentoring technical teams and fostering collaborative innovation
- Track record of leading projects from ideation through successful product delivery
- Excellent communication skills with ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
- Experience with WebAssembly or WasmEdge runtime environments
- Knowledge of vector databases and embedding techniques
- Background in systems design for high-performance, distributed computing
- Experience with tokenomics and incentive mechanisms in decentralized networks
- Understanding of privacy-preserving computation methods
- Previous startup experience, especially in research leadership roles
