[Feature]: An easy way to manually update WebView2 version #5655

Closed

Description

@bananalemonmelon

Describe the feature/enhancement you need

I recently found that my WebView2 version is outdated, despite that I do weekly manual update on my system (windows update, ms-edge, winget --upgrade-available, etc). Note that I have been in a metered-connection mode for several months now, as I've been in a remote area that out-of-reach from broadband.

Seems like there is no way to manually trigger the built-in update mechanism on metered-mode.

The scenario/use case where you would use this feature

Under continuous metered-connection mode, yet want an easy way to have WebView2 keep updated.

How important is this request to you?

Impactful. My app's user experience would be significantly compromised without it.

Suggested implementation

Include WebView2 update into ms-edge manual update process (Help > About).

Or maybe include it in windows update?

Or maybe publish the update into winget?

What does your app do? Is there a pending deadline for this request?

    Thanks for raising this request. We understand the scenario and the need to trigger WebView2 update on demand.

    This is currently lower on our priority list given other WebView2 investments. We’ll keep tracking interest and revisit this if we see broader demand from additional scenarios and partners.
