Summary

  • The HELP reply (sms.help, en-US and es-US) now names the registered A2P brand "OneBusAway Cloud", gives a support contact (info@onebusaway.org, onebusawaycloud.com/sms), and says message and data rates may apply and how to opt out with STOP. This is part of fixing the rejected A2P campaign (error 30909). The brand is written literally instead of using {brand}, because it has to match the registered campaign brand whatever APP_BRAND_NAME is set to.
  • STOP used to be handled like new, so the app replied to an opt-out with the help text. The app now clears the rider's session and returns empty TwiML. Twilio's opt-out handling records the opt-out and sends the confirmation.

Test plan

  • make test, make vet, make fmt pass; new TestSMSHandler_StopKeywordSendsNoMessage
  • Ran the server locally and POSTed to /sms: help and HELP return the new copy; an unknown keyword still falls through to the stop lookup
  • make lint fails with 3 staticcheck QF1012 warnings in formatters/response.go. main fails with the same 3, so they're not from this PR.

Review notes

  • The other 8 locales (ar, de, fr, ko, pl, pt, ru, zh-CN) still have the old HELP text, with no brand, support contact, rates notice or STOP. Riders who switch to one of those languages get a HELP reply that doesn't meet CTIA requirements. These need translating in a follow-up.
  • Message length: the English HELP reply is 2 SMS segments (it was 1). The Spanish one is UCS-2 because of its accented letters, so about 4 segments. HELP is rare, so the cost is small.
  • localization/test_helper.go and handlers/sms_test.go still use their own fake copies of the old help string. Tests pass, but those copies no longer match the real text.
  • Companion: OneBusAway/obacloud-marketing#8 adds the /sms page this reply links to.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Sending STOP now clears SMS and disambiguation sessions without sending a reply. Sending NEW continues to provide the help message.
  • Updates
    • Updated English and Spanish help messages with stop-ID and departure instructions, support and website details, messaging rates, and STOP opt-out information.

STOP was handled like 'new', so the app answered an opt-out with the
help text, which now says 'Reply STOP to opt out'. Twilio's opt-out
management records the opt-out and sends the confirmation, so the app
now clears the session and sends nothing. The Spanish HELP reply uses
'ID de parada' to match the rest of the locale and is shorter.

📝 Walkthrough

The SMS keyword router now handles STOP separately from NEW and CLEAR. STOP clears both sender session types and returns empty TwiML. English and Spanish-US help messages now provide service usage and support details, plus rates and opt-out information.

Changes: SMS handling and help

Layer / File(s) Summary
STOP keyword handling
handlers/sms.go, handlers/sms_test.go
The router sends STOP to a handler that clears the sender’s SMS and disambiguation sessions and returns an empty TwiML response. A test checks for HTTP 200 and no <Message> element.
Localized SMS help messages
locales/en-US.json, locales/es-US.json
The English and Spanish-US help messages describe the service, usage, support, possible message and data rates, and STOP opt-out.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 47d48

The STOP handler clears both sessions, but its new test would still pass if either cleanup regressed, potentially leaving stale context for a later reply. Add assertions for both cleanup paths; this bounded test improvement can be followed up before or alongside merge.

Assert that STOP clears existing session state.

The fixture starts with an empty store, so a handler that returns empty TwiML but stops clearing sessions still passes this test. Seed an SMS session and a disambiguation session in separate subtests, then assert that each is absent after STOP. Stale state can make a later more request use the old stop or route a numeric message through disambiguation.
