stored procedures distinguish transactions they start from caller-owned ambient
transactions, use a savepoint when rollback to it is valid, and define handling
for an uncommittable ambient transaction. Preserve the standalone-script
guidance to roll back only the transaction the script started.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winRequire no ambient transaction for standalone scripts.
Line 19 is safe only when
@@TRANCOUNTis zero at entry. SQL Server does not manage nested transactions independently. An unqualifiedROLLBACKrolls back the outer transaction and all inner transactions. A deployment runner that wraps this script in a transaction can therefore lose unrelated caller work. The rule does not expressly exclude that execution context.Suggested fix
-- Standalone scripts: BEGIN TRY / BEGIN TRAN / COMMIT; in CATCH: IF @@TRANCOUNT > 0 ROLLBACK; THROW; (rolls back only the transaction the script started) +- Standalone scripts (require @@TRANCOUNT = 0 at entry): BEGIN TRY / BEGIN TRAN / COMMIT; in CATCH: IF @@TRANCOUNT > 0 ROLLBACK; THROW; (rolls back only the transaction the script started)This correction applies to standalone scripts. The stored-procedure savepoint guidance already handles an existing transaction separately.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Exclude autocommit-only DDL from the transaction template.
This guidance applies the explicit transaction pattern to every standalone write script. SQL Server requires CREATE DATABASE, ALTER DATABASE, and DROP DATABASE to run in autocommit mode, so scripts for these operations will fail. (learn.microsoft.com)
Proposed guidance update
- Standalone scripts: BEGIN TRY / BEGIN TRAN / COMMIT; in CATCH: ...
+ For transaction-capable writes, use BEGIN TRY / BEGIN TRAN / COMMIT; in CATCH: ...
+ Run autocommit-only statements, such as CREATE, ALTER, or DROP DATABASE, outside this transaction pattern.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Require implicit transactions to be off.
@@TRANCOUNT = 0 does not establish that IMPLICIT_TRANSACTIONS is off. When it is on, BEGIN TRAN sets @@TRANCOUNT to 2, so the template’s single COMMIT leaves the transaction open and its writes uncommitted. Require IMPLICIT_TRANSACTIONS OFF before using this template. (learn.microsoft.com)

Handle distributed transactions before using savepoints.
SQL Server does not support SAVE TRAN in a distributed transaction. A procedure called with an ambient distributed transaction will fail at the savepoint; linked-server work can also promote a local transaction after the savepoint is created, making rollback to it unavailable. Define a separate behavior for these cases. (learn.microsoft.com)

+ Stored procedures: if @@TRANCOUNT = 0 at entry, own the transaction (...); otherwise use SAVE TRAN only when the transaction is local and cannot be promoted. Define caller-owned full-rollback behavior for distributed transactions.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents
