Add Supabase (RLS Security) rule - #419
mateuszingano wants to merge 1 commit into
Conversation
Framework-agnostic Supabase security rule: RLS on every table, policies scoped to the user, explicit grants (including the Oct 30 2026 Data API change), and keeping the service_role key out of the browser. Added to the Security section.

Allow an explicit policy for intentionally public reads.
These requirements make an intentionally public table impossible to read without login: every policy must be user-scoped, using (true) is prohibited, and verification expects every table to return no rows. This conflicts with the guidance to grant anon access to genuinely public data. Supabase documents USING (true) for public reads. (supabase.com)
Add an exception for intentionally public rows. Also distinguish WITH CHECK (true), which permits matching inserts or updates but does not expose existing rows.
Suggested wording
-2. **Add a policy per operation, scoped to the user** (not just to a role):
+2. **Add a policy per operation.** Scope private data to the user:
- `SELECT` / `DELETE`: `using (user_id = (select auth.uid()))`
- `INSERT`: `with check (user_id = (select auth.uid()))`
- `UPDATE`: **both** `using (...)` and `with check (...)`
+ For intentionally public reads, allow only the public rows and operations.
...
-- Use `using (true)` or `with check (true)` on a table a client role can reach. RLS is "on" but every row is exposed.
+- Use `using (true)` only when every row allowed by that policy is intentionally public. Use `with check (true)` only when unrestricted inserts or updates are intended.
...
-- Against the live database, connect with the anon key and confirm each table returns nothing without a login.
+- Against the live database, confirm private tables return no rows without login and public tables return only intended public rows.Also applies to: 23-23, 32-32

Use future-tense wording for the rollout.
As of October 18, 2026, October 30 is still in the future. Supabase says the change will apply to all existing projects starting October 30, 2026. Replace “Since” with “Starting” so the rule is accurate before the rollout. (supabase.com)

Adds a framework-agnostic Supabase security rule to the Security section.
It encodes the pattern that keeps Row Level Security correct and the
service_rolekey out of the browser: enable RLS + a per-operation policy scoped toauth.uid()+ explicit grants in the same migration, never shipservice_roleto the browser, nousing (true)on client-reachable tables, and don't fix a42501with a blanketgrant ... on all tables. Includes the Oct 30 2026 Data API grants change.rules/supabase-rls-security-cursorrules-prompt-file.mdcwith the required frontmatter (description,globs,alwaysApply: false).Original work, neutral and practical.
