Simulate development runtime - #443
Conversation
A Provider manifest passed with --providers can now carry simulate.crossplane.io/runtime: Development, like render's per-function runtime annotation: the CLI connects to a diff server the user already runs, from source or under a debugger, at the gRPC target in runtime-development-target (default localhost:9099, upjet's default --address) instead of fetching the package and starting a container. Nothing is fetched for such a provider, and the plan protocol has no RPC that reports what a server serves, so the manifest declares the API groups in runtime-development-api-groups. Resources in those groups route to it unless a package-run server ships a CRD for their exact kind. Docker is only pinged when some provider still needs a container. 404-404: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winConsider a shorter readiness timeout for Development targets.
Thanks for sharing this clean split between the container and Development paths. I have one question about the timing.
A Development provider points at a server the user already runs.
connectDevelopmentcallsm.dial, which callswaitReadywithm.readyTimeout. The default is 60 seconds (defaultReadyTimeout). If the user forgets to start the server, a refused connection returns
codes.Unavailable.waitReadytreats that as "not ready yet" and polls every 500 ms until the full timeout. The CLI then shows no progress except the spinner for about a minute. After that, it skips the provider and falls back to approximate diffs. The 60-second budget makes sense for a container that is still booting. A server that should already be running probably needs a much shorter budget, for example 5 to 10 seconds. That would give faster feedback on the most common mistake. The skip message already tells the user to start the diff-server command.
Could
dialtake the timeout as a parameter, soconnectkeepsm.readyTimeoutandconnectDevelopmentuses a shorter value? Is there a reason to keep 60 seconds here, such as a debugger that is slow to start?♻️ Possible direction

Reject codes.Unimplemented during readiness.
A reachable target without PlanService returns codes.Unimplemented for the empty probe. waitReady accepts it, so the target is registered for its declared API groups. Each routed simulation then returns a Plan error instead of using the best-effort skip path and approximate diff.
Please preserve codes.InvalidArgument as readiness success because the supported Upjet diff server returns it for an empty request.

Fixes #442
Allows provider developers to run the diff server as a local process when running
crossplane resource simulate, which substantially shortens the development loop of diff servers.I have:
./nix.sh flake checkto ensure this PR is ready for review.- [ ] Addedbackport release-x.ylabels to auto-backport this PR.Need help with this checklist? See the cheat sheet.
Local reproducer if you'd like to see it in action
Enter some throwaway directory e.g. /Users/mysuer/development-simulate
1. Start the diff server (this may take some time)
2. Prepare a cluster
The VirtualNetwork CRD is deliberately not installed: an unserved kind has no live counterpart and
plans as a create.
3. Build the CLI from the branch and simulate
See logs showing in the terminal window with provider diff server
4. Cleanup
and stop the
go runprocess in the first terminal
