Phase 1 of the accepted design docs/design/2026-10-26-workbench-layout-and-editing-design.md, plus the design record itself (Staged edits, cards from changes, checks before applying and git-repository card registries are later phases). Layout only; no editing behavior changes.

What changes

  • Left icon rail and drawer. The side-panel tabs become a vertical rail (Find, Changes, Validate, Cards, Assistant; plugin panels below a divider). Clicking an entry opens its pane in a drawer; clicking it again closes the drawer and the map takes the width. Keyboard: arrow keys move, Enter/Space toggle. The edit pane is renamed Changes with a history icon (panel ids unchanged).
  • Details on the right. The Inspect pane becomes a right-hand panel that opens when a record is focused (map click, table row, Validate) and closes with × or Escape; resizable, width remembered.
  • Layers & legend card on the map. The View tab and the separate legend are replaced by one collapsible card at the map's top-left: per-layer eye toggles, swatches, "by ‹column›" pickers with their legends, an expandable Links row (width, direction, offset, "Show only links where…"), overlays with explanations, and basemap labels. Hidden in Table view; remembers collapsed.
  • Tooltip layer. One #tip element above everything, positioned to stay on screen (placeTip), replaces the clipped CSS ::after tooltips; plugin data-tip buttons use it automatically.
  • The project-cards plugin's panel order moves to 35 so the rail reads Find, Changes, Validate, Cards, Assistant.

Testing

  • uv run --all-extras pytest packages plugins -n auto -m "": 4679 passed, 6 skipped (opt-in live/LLM tests). ruff and import-linter clean.
  • Browser-checked on Leavenworth: rail open/close, Details from a table row and a map node (× and Escape close it), the Layers card (legends, eye toggles, Links options, collapse persists, hidden in Table view), tooltips at the left and right screen edges.

Known follow-ups

  • On a narrow window the map and table are squeezed between the drawer and Details; closing either helps. A later pass could auto-close the drawer when Details opens below a width.
  • The basemap picker stays in Settings (only the labels toggle moved).
  • Docs screenshots still show the old layout.
