Fixes #481

Problem

The Meta messaging adapters request id,from,message,created_time,attachments. Instagram returns shared posts and reels in shares, story replies and mentions in story, and images in attachments.data[].image_data.url without a mime_type. OpenPost requested neither field and read image_data.src, so these messages were stored without body or attachment. On our instance 60 of 228 Instagram messages were empty for this reason.

Change

  • messaging_meta_history.go: one field list metaMessageFields with shares and story, used for conversations and history. metaMessageView maps shares to share attachments and story mentions and replies to story_mention and story_reply attachments. Images are read from image_data.url with src as a fallback; without mime_type the type is inferred from image_data or video_data.
  • messaging_meta.go: conversations use metaMessageFields.
  • messaging_meta_content_test.go: conversations and history with a Graph-shaped image, share, story mention and story reply, plus the legacy src and mime_type shape.
  • CHANGELOG.md: entry under Unreleased, Fixed.

The inbox already renders every attachment type as a link (attachment.name || attachment.type), so the web app is unchanged. With the extra fields, a page of 50 conversations with messages.limit(100) still returned without a size error on our largest account.

Verification

  • go vet ./internal/platform/ and gofmt -l clean.
  • go test ./internal/platform/ ./internal/services/messaging/ pass (Go 1.26).
  • With the old parsing code both new fetch tests fail; the legacy-shape test passes on old and new code.

Independent of #480 (timestamps); the two touch different lines.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Instagram and Facebook inbox messages now display links for shared posts and reels, story mentions, and story replies, including when the message has no text.
    • Image attachments now display correctly when their image URL is available, even if no image type is specified. Existing image attachments using legacy image details continue to work.

Instagram returns shared posts and reels in `shares`, story replies and
mentions in `story`, and image attachments in `image_data.url` without a
mime_type. The Meta adapters requested neither field and read
`image_data.src`, so these messages were stored without body or
attachment and showed up empty. Request both fields in conversations and
history, map them to link attachments, read image_data.url with src as a
fallback and infer the type when mime_type is missing.

Walkthrough

Meta conversation and history requests now include shared-post and story fields. Message conversion handles image URLs from image_data.url, shared-post links, and story mention and reply links as attachments. Tests cover both fetch paths and legacy image fields.

Changes: Meta message attachments

Request and decode Meta message fields

Conversation and history requests include shares and story. The message view decodes those fields.
Convert message content to attachments

Conversion prefers image_data.url over src, infers image or video type when MIME type is absent, and adds nonempty share and story links as attachments. Tests cover conversation and history fetching and legacy image fields.

Shared posts and reels in Meta inbox messages may still appear empty because the request does not ask for the share subfields and the decoder ignores the documented url field. Request explicit share subfields and decode url before merging.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: Meta messaging now reads shared posts, stories, and image URLs. The changeset adds shares/story fields, maps shared posts and story mentions/replies to link attachments, and reads image_data.url with a src fallback. The title is specific, follows the conventional commit style, and is a single sentence of 67 characters.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #481 requires Meta conversations and history to request shares and story, preserve Graph image URLs, infer missing image or video types, and expose shared posts and story mentions or replies as attachments. metaMessageFields includes shares and story and is used by both fetch paths. metaMessageView.provider prefers image_data.url, falls back to src, infers types when mime_type is absent, and maps the requested link fields to share, story_mention, and story_reply attachments. Tests cover both fetch paths and the legacy image shape. The issue excludes unsupported messages with no content, and the PR does not need to implement that case.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #481. The shared field constant updates the two required Meta fetch paths. The provider mapping implements the required attachment behavior. The added tests verify the issue cases, and the changelog records the fix. No unrelated web-app or product behavior changes are present.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 4 functions across 3 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

L202: # Instagram Post Shares: New Attachment Type and Transition Period
L203:
L204: Starting November 3, 2025, the webhook payload for Instagram post shares will include two attachments: the existing `share` attachment and a new `ig_post` attachment. The payload now provides additional metadata, including media ID, URL, and title (caption).
L205: If this change is not compatible with your app and you need more time to make updates, please contact our BSE support team via the 【78†Meta Developer Support Portal†developers.facebook.com】 to request exclusion of your app(s) from this change until you make the necessary updates to support the new attachment type.
L206: The old `share` attachment type will continue to be supported for Instagram posts until February 1, 2026, after which it will be removed. Partners and integrators are encouraged to migrate to the new `ig_post` attachment type as soon as possible.

Read the documented url field for shared posts.

If Graph returns a share entry with url and no link, Link stays empty. The guard at line 79 then skips the attachment. Meta's Message reference documents share entries with name, description, type, url, and id. Read url as a fallback to link, and add a fixture for the url shape.

The same reference states that the shares object returns its data only when sub-fields are requested. metaMessageFields at line 54 requests bare shares. Request the documented sub-fields, for example shares{name, type, url,id}, so that url is returned at all.

line 40:
Update the share entry decoded by the Link field to also read url, and use it
when link is empty before creating a share attachment. Update metaMessageFields
to request shares sub-fields including url, and add a fixture covering a share
with url and no link.

Graph documents a share entry's url and some payloads send link, so read
both. Story replies delivered by webhook carry the story in reply_to,
which was dropped, leaving the reply without its attachment. Record the
change as a changes fragment instead of editing CHANGELOG.md.

Maintainer follow-up before merge (in ed70522):

  • A share's documented field on the Message reference is shares.data[].url; link is kept as the fallback for the payload shape you observed.
  • Story replies delivered by webhook carry the story in reply_to.story.url rather than an attachment, and that path dropped it. It now produces the same story_reply attachment, with a test.
  • The changelog entry moved to changes/481.md so parallel tickets do not conflict.

One limitation worth knowing: message insertion skips rows that already exist, so messages stored empty before this fix are not rewritten by a later sync. Only newly collected messages show their content.

Merged as f738ff0. Thanks for the detailed report and tests.
