Merges the new-resolver-config feature branch into main. It implements the new resolver config proposal. Epic: #1254.

What it does

A package can now use one source: block instead of plugins and scattered settings. The block picks:

  • how fromager finds versions (PyPI index, GitHub or GitLab tags)
  • what it downloads (sdist, prebuilt wheel, tarball or git checkout)
  • how it makes the sdist (pep517 or tarball)

Providers: pypi-sdist, pypi-prebuilt, pypi-download, pypi-git, github-tag-git, github-tag-download, gitlab-tag-git, gitlab-tag-download, hook-sdist, hook-prebuilt, not-available.

Packages without source: work as before.

Breaking change

sources.download_source() now returns DownloadedSource (path and kind) instead of a Path, for all packages. Code that calls it must use .path.

Downstream plugins are not affected: plugins that implement the download_source hook still return a Path. Only one downstream script calls sources.download_source(), and the fix is to add .path to the call.

Pending, not blocking

These only affect packages that use source::

Issue Work Status

…er` PBI property

Uncomment the `source: SourceResolver | None` field on both
`PackageSettings` and `VariantInfo`, add `SourceResolver` to the
public API, and wire up a `PackageBuildInfo.source_resolver` property
with variant-then-package fallback.

This is the foundation for all downstream resolver-config wiring
(Phases 2-9 of the new resolver config epic).

Prevent confusing configs where the new `source` field silently
overrides legacy fields. Package-level `source` now conflicts with
`download_source` and `resolver_dist`; variant-level `source`
conflicts with `wheel_server_url` and `pre_built`.

feat(packagesettings): error when source and legacy settings are both set
Updating new-resolver-config branch
Route packages with source resolver configuration through the configured
provider while preserving legacy override behavior. Widen
`AbstractResolver.resolver_provider` to accept `RequirementType | None`
and remove the `typing.cast` that hid the mismatch. Add coverage for
source and bootstrap resolution paths and document the dispatch.

…lvers

Source resolvers bypassed `resolve_package_cooldown()`, so the global
`--min-release-age` flag was silently ignored and top-level `==` pins
did not disable the cooldown.

Extract `_effective_cooldown()` from `resolve_package_cooldown()` and
call it in the source-resolver dispatch path so both legacy and
configured resolvers share the same cooldown merge logic.

feat(resolver): dispatch configured source resolvers
Route hook-backed source resolver profiles through `get_resolver_provider`, forwarding resolver context and server URL while preserving legacy hook signatures. Validate returned providers and cover cooldown and error behavior.

fix(resolver): delegate hook source providers
New `source:` profiles can download more than sdists. Dispatch
configured downloads through their resolver and return
`(Path, DownloadKind)` so later phases can handle each artifact.
Keep the legacy hook path for packages without `source:`.

chore(sync): merge main into new-resolver-config
Replace `tuple[Path, DownloadKind]` with a frozen `DownloadedSource`
dataclass so the download contract is stable before Phase 4 consumes
the artifact kind to select prepare/build strategies.

Implement `HookSDistResolver.download()` and
`HookPrebuiltResolver.download()` through the `download_source` override
hook. For legacy hooks returning a bare `Path`, `HookSDistResolver`
treats `.tar.gz` and `.zip` files as `sdist`, while `HookPrebuiltResolver`
treats `.whl` files as `prebuilt_wheel`. Bare directories and other path
forms require `DownloadedSource` with an explicit supported kind.
Reject `any_source`, `not_available`, and kinds incompatible with the
selected profile.

fix(sources): honor resolver sdist build strategy
Carry DownloadedSource.kind through bootstrap and build entry points. Unpack ordinary archives; prepare clean Git checkouts in place so patches, project overrides, and Rust vendoring run.

Keep prepare_source override arguments and path-only callers compatible. Document the public Git helper and no-cleanup behavior, and reject dirty nested submodules before preparation.

Reject archive input paths that cleanup would remove before extraction, preserving the input and reporting an actionable error.

fix(sources): prepare Git checkouts by download kind
Resolve and download fresh prebuilt wheels through the selected source

and legacy behavior.

fix(resolver): honor configured prebuilt wheel resolvers
`downloads/` and `prebuilt/` can hold different wheels with the same
filename. On a local mirror hit, bootstrap reused the same-named file
from the other folder and then switched the mirror to serve it.

Add `server.find_mirror_wheel()` to follow the mirror link to the real
file. `download_prebuilt_wheel()` returns that file for configured
packages, `bg_prepare_prebuilt()` switches the mirror only after a fresh
download, and `_is_wheel_built()` uses the same lookup.

Hook profiles now have an `index_url` setting. `hook-prebuilt` must set
it. `hook-sdist` uses PyPI if it is not set. Fromager passes this URL to
the `get_resolver_provider` hook, so existing hooks keep working.

Profiles in `source:` now always use their own index. If a command
passes a different URL, Fromager ignores it and logs a warning.

Walkthrough

The change adds package- and variant-level source resolver settings, typed download results, and resolver-aware provider selection. Bootstrap and build paths handle configured prebuilt wheels and pass artifact kinds into source preparation. Preparation supports archives and Git checkouts. Build-order replay validates recorded provider names and uses configured download paths. Documentation and tests cover resolver behavior, Git and archive builds, mirror handling, and replay validation.

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~120 minutes

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to ccd98

Resolve the replay, artifact-validation, and Git checkout layout gaps before merging: configured downloads can differ from the requested build, and later build steps can fail to find prepared sources. Override listings also misreport inherited prebuilt sources.

Pass the recorded extras when replay rebuilds the download request.

Replay builds req from dist and version only, so req.extras is always empty. This PR now sends configured-resolver entries through sources.download_source, which calls the download_source hook with that request. A hook that selects its artifact by req.extras can cache a different artifact than the build uses. Rebuild req from the recorded req field, and fall back to the current form for older build orders.

Validate --source-path Git checkouts before preparation.

The --source-path help text requires Git checkouts to use the standard work directory layout. prepare-source does not enforce that layout. It accepts any directory that contains .git, patches and vendors that checkout in place, and writes build metadata to its parent. Later prepare-build, build-sdist, and build-wheel search only wkctx.work_dir, so they can fail to find the checkout. Reject a Git --source-path outside the work directory before calling sources.prepare_source.

_download_from_hook checks only the Python type and the DownloadKind of a DownloadedSource. It does not check that the path exists or has the form the kind requires. A prebuilt_wheel result that names a missing or non-wheel file is then copied into wheels_prebuilt. The error surfaces later as a raw FileNotFoundError, or the wrong file is returned as a wheel.

Suggested fix

             supported = ", ".join(sorted(kind.value for kind in self.download_kinds))

Update _download_from_hook to validate prebuilt_wheel results before returning:

Validate the staged prebuilt wheel name and version before staging it.

download_prebuilt_wheel stages a hook-returned wheel without checking that its filename matches req and version. A download_source hook that returns another distribution's or version's wheel is staged, indexed in the local mirror, and recorded as complete for the requested version.

@LalatenduMohanty Thanks for tracking this in #1422.

You are interacting with an AI system.

0.102.0 was released from `main` without the new resolver config, so
the feature branch's version notes must name the next release.

- Change every `versionadded` and `versionchanged` added on this
  branch (0.95.0, 0.96.0 and 0.102.0) to 0.103.0.
- Merge notes that now sit next to each other with the same version.
- Drop the stale "do not fall back to PyPI" sentence for hook profiles.
  Since #1409, a hook profile without a `get_resolver_provider` hook
  finds versions on its `index_url`.

fix(find-updates): honor configured source resolvers
rd4398 and others added 2 commits October 30, 2026 12:04
Add a 'source' column/field to the list-overrides details table, CSV,
and JSON exporters showing the package-level source resolver provider
(blank for legacy packages) so the column does not change with
--variant. Variant columns now also mark variants whose 'source:'
resolver returns prebuilt wheels as 'pre-built'.

package list-versions now builds its provider through
sources.get_source_provider() so 'source:' packages list versions from
their configured provider instead of the legacy hook path, and its
cooldown status reads the per-package min_release_age through the
shared PackageBuildInfo.resolver_min_release_age helper, which now
prefers the source resolver's value over resolver_dist. An explicit
--distribution-type is rejected for 'source:' packages instead of
being silently ignored, since resolution follows the source config.

Use the effective source resolver when a variant has no source:.

A variant without source: reads only pre_built. With a package-level pypi-prebuilt source, list-overrides --details shows yes for that variant, although its effective resolver provides pre-built wheels. Fall back to the package-level source before reading pre_built.

Update the prebuilt-wheel check in the list-overrides details flow to use the
effective source: prefer v_info.source, and fall back to the package-level

determine the result using its resolves_prebuilt_wheel property; retain
v_info.pre_built as the fallback when neither source is present.

Add a test for a source package that inherits the global cooldown.

[Critical] — src/fromager/packagesettings/_resolver.py (line 577; file-level because that line sits outside the diff hunks)

Both GitLab tag providers fail on every lookup. project_url.port is None when the URL has no explicit port, so _gitlab_provider() builds https://gitlab.example.com:None; the first API request then raises InvalidURL: Port could not be cast to integer value as 'None', with no retry. The line predates this PR, but source: was commented out on main, so this PR is what makes it reachable. Omit the port when absent, and assert the full URL in the two tests instead of a substring.

         return resolver.GitLabTagProvider(
             project_path=self.project_url.path.lstrip("/"),

[Recommendation] — cross-cutting (sources.py, wheels.py, packagesettings/_pbi.py, bootstrap_requirement_resolver.py, bootstrapper/, commands/)

source_resolver is not None is now open-coded at 19 sites in 10 modules: sources.py 7, wheels.py 2, _pbi.py 2, download_sequence.py 2, build/find_updates/package 1 each, _cache/_bootstrapper/bootstrap_requirement_resolver 1 each. Each site decides configured-vs-legacy itself, so the two paths stay in sync only by hand — and three have already drifted:

  • Cooldown is re-implemented inline in get_source_provider (sources.py:167) instead of calling resolve_package_cooldown, which this PR made source-aware. The copy already loses the "== pin" log line.
  • find-updates (find_updates.py:192) re-implements the legacy provider construction that get_source_provider already does, instead of using the shared path this PR extended for it.
  • sources.build_sdist (sources.py:664) tests the same condition three times and ends with an unreachable else.

I'd strongly encourage reconsidering this dispatch shape before merge. Nineteen independent branches is a lot of duplication to take on for a feature that will keep growing, and the drift above shows it is already costing correctness. Making configured-vs-legacy one decision per call site is a much smaller surface to maintain: have PackageBuildInfo return either a ConfiguredStrategy (wraps the source: resolver) or a LegacyStrategy (wraps today's hooks and settings), each implementing resolver_provider, download, prepare, build_sdist, and prebuilt_wheel. If that is too large for this PR, collapsing just cooldown, provider construction, and sdist dispatch would remove the drift and most of the branches.

[Recommendation] — cross-cutting (docs/proposals/new-resolver-config.md, docs/reference/hooks.rst, e2e/)

Migrating to source: can silently ignore a package's existing hooks. The proposal (docs/proposals/new-resolver-config.md:170-174) requires a hook-* provider whenever a package has a resolver_provider/download_source hook and source: settings, but the rule is implemented nowhere and docs/reference/hooks.rst no longer mentions it, so the two documents disagree.

An override with download_source() that clones from an internal host gets source: {provider: pypi-sdist}; fromager loads it, skips the hook, and builds a different artifact with no warning. Coverage is thin too: e2e exercises 2 of 11 profiles, and neither hook profile, even though e2e/test_prebuilt_wheel_hook.sh already exists.

Either enforce the rule at settings load, or drop it deliberately and document "explicit provider wins" in both places. Add an e2e case with a download_source hook under hook-prebuilt.

[Recommendation] — src/fromager/sources.py (intended line 766; file-level because that hunk is unchanged in this PR)

build_sdist: tarball on a Git checkout writes the whole .git directory into the published sdist. tar_reproducible skips VCS metadata only with exclude_vcs=True, which no caller passes, and for a checkout build_dir is the clone itself. The combination is documented in this PR's own proposal (pypi-git + tarball), so a mid-size project ships tens of megabytes of history plus submodule gitlinks.

In default_build_sdist:

         tarballs.tar_reproducible(
             tar=sdist,
             basedir=build_dir,
             prefix=build_dir.parent,
             arcname_root=f"{dist_name}-{version}",
+            exclude_vcs=True,
         )

exclude_vcs=True is safe for archives too: an sdist's own directory never legitimately contains a .git/.hg/.bzr/.svn entry.

[Recommendation] — src/fromager/commands/build.py (intended line 179; file-level because that hunk is unchanged in this PR)

download-sequence rejects a build order whose source_provider doesn't match current settings, but build-sequence — the command that actually replays it — doesn't. Replaying a github-tag-git order under pypi-download settings sends a git+https://… URL to the plain downloader and fails with InvalidSchema or a 404 instead of "settings don't match this build order".

The check already exists in download_sequence.py:79-92. Extract it into a shared helper and call it from both commands, right after reading the order:

     with read.open_file_or_url(build_order_file) as f:
-        for entry in progress.progress(json.load(f)):
+        build_order = json.load(f)
+    _check_source_providers(wkctx, build_order)
+    for entry in progress.progress(build_order):

Keep the _skip_recorded_url skip logic in download-sequence, since it is specific to replaying downloads.

[Nit] — tests (tests/test_commands.py, tests/test_wheels.py, tests/test_bootstrapper.py)

_configure_package() and _source_yaml() are byte-identical in tests/test_commands.py:23, tests/test_wheels.py:23, and tests/test_bootstrapper.py:51 (only the ctx annotation differs). _source_yaml() encodes a live schema rule (hook-prebuilt needs index_url), so each new required field must be added in three places. tests/conftest.py already hosts shared helpers — move both there.

Used when versions are already known, e.g. from a prior
resolution or a settings-provided URL template.

[Nit] — docs/concepts/resolver-architecture.rst (line 95)

Four versionchanged:: 0.103.0 blocks now hold ~110 lines of explanation, and the hook-profile behaviour is stated twice (inside the first directive and again in the paragraph below it). Concept pages should describe current behaviour; the directives should be short change notes. Keep one short note per section and move the prose into the body — otherwise the next maintainer must migrate it before the next change.

Fair point; not blocking. Tracked in #1425.

# Get package build info to determine distribution preferences

[Discussion — proposed Nit] — src/fromager/commands/find_updates.py (line 192)

--distribution-type behaves three ways on a source: package: list-versions raises, find-updates silently ignores it, and get_source_provider silently ignores the equivalent flags while warning about the analogous URL. find-updates --distribution-type sdist over a pypi-prebuilt package returns wheel-based versions with no indication the flag was ignored. Both current behaviours are documented, so this may be deliberate — but pick one rule (warn naming the package, or reject) and apply it in all three places.

Intentional and documented: the source: provider decides which distributions are used. Making all commands follow one rule is tracked in #1423.

# Show the package-level source so the column does not change with
# --variant; variant-level sources appear in the variant columns.
source = ps.source.provider if ps.source is not None else ""
min_release_age = pbi.resolver_min_release_age

[Discussion — proposed Nit] — src/fromager/commands/list_overrides.py (line 97)

The new source column is deliberately package-level "so the column does not change with --variant", but min_release_age two lines below now comes from the variant-aware pbi.resolver_min_release_age(). So one column ignores the variant and the next follows it. The new test (tests/test_list_overrides.py:355-363) locks in both, but neither the commit message nor the docs mention that min_release_age became variant-dependent. If intended, say so in the comment; if not, ps.source.min_release_age if ps.source else ps.resolver_dist.min_release_age restores the package-level reading.

Intentional: packages without source: are unchanged, and a variant source: can set its own min_release_age.

@Lanceypantsy re: your review

build_sdist: tarball on a Git checkout writes the whole .git directory into the published sdist.

Confirmed, thanks. Fixed in #1417: only the configured tarball path leaves out .git. Packages without source: are unchanged.

@Lanceypantsy re: your review

Thanks for the review. Where each point stands:

Finding Status
GitLab :None port Not reproducible: HttpUrl.port defaults to 443, so server_url is https://gitlab.com:443. A full-URL test is in #1424
.git in tarball sdists Fixed in #1417
Hook-profile rule #1416, plus e2e coverage in #1420
build-sequence provider check #1418
Copied cooldown logic #1419
Other dispatch examples Intentional: find-updates keeps the legacy path, and the build_sdist else is reachable (prebuilt profiles have build_sdist: None)
Duplicated test helpers #1424

None of these block #1414.
