feat: [combobox] use base ui chips, clear, empty, and status - #954
Multi-select Combobox.Input renders chips with Base UI Combobox.Chips, Chip, and ChipRemove. Chips get the toolbar role, arrow keys move between chips, and Backspace removes the last value. The look and the "+N" overflow chip stay the same.
Add Combobox.Label (a visible label linked to the input), Combobox.Clear (clear-all button), Combobox.Empty ("No results" live region), and Combobox.Status (hidden live region with the result count). Combobox.Content renders Empty and Status by default. Place either one inside Content to change its text.
Breaking: chips no longer use the Input chips prop. The input-chip-container, input-chip, and input-chip-overflow slots inside a combobox are now combobox-chips, combobox-chip, combobox-chip-remove, and combobox-chip-overflow. The group label part is renamed from Combobox.Label to Combobox.GroupLabel, and its slot from combobox-label to combobox-group-label. Combobox.Label and combobox-label now mean the input label.
Docs: new parts in props, demos, anatomy, and the Slots table.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The Chip API replaces isDismissible and onDismiss with a compound Chip.Remove control. Input now accepts Chip elements or Chip props. The Combobox adds input labels, group labels, clear controls, empty states, result-count status, and chip-based multiple selection. Tests, package exports, demos, and component documentation are updated for these APIs.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Associate Combobox.Label with the actual input ID.
If a caller sets id on Combobox.Input, Base UI renders that ID on the input, but Combobox.Label uses the root ID from this context. The label then neither names nor focuses the input. Keep the label’s htmlFor and the rendered input ID in sync, including when the input has an explicit ID. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

…s in Input
- Chip drops isDismissible and onDismiss. Chip.Remove renders the remove button and supports render.
- Input chips take Chip props or Chip elements instead of { label, onRemove }.
- Combobox.Input wraps Input in Base UI Chips and passes each chip as a Chip element rendered as Base UI Chip and ChipRemove. Input no longer exports InputFrame or inputFieldClassName.
- The +N Backspace override skips read-only inputs and modifier keys.
- Update the docs, demos, Figma template and upgrading guide.
The trailing icon wrapper had aria-hidden, which hid buttons in it, such as the Search clear button. Unlabeled lucide icons set aria-hidden themselves, so plain icons stay hidden. The leading icon wrapper keeps aria-hidden.
Combobox.Empty and Combobox.Status are thin Base UI wrappers. CSS hides Empty while an option is shown, so items no longer count matches. Status takes a function child that gets the match count, as in Command.Status, and goes anywhere inside Combobox. Combobox.Input passes chips only in multiple mode and leaves Backspace to Base UI. The root no longer forces a controlled value, and ComboboxItem matches main again. Combobox.Input passes disabled to the Base UI input and the clear button, so root and input disabled work.

Combobox.Status remains inside the listbox at head. This behavior also exists at the merge base, so this PR did not introduce it. The suggested change remains a valid accessibility fix, but it does not restore merge-base behavior.

Base UI treats a press anywhere in Chips as a press on the input. The Chips wrapper was full width, so it was wider than an input narrowed with classNames.container. Chips now uses display: contents, so the input container sets the area.
