WeftBorn
Type: A calling, neither a species nor a faction
Known callings: SongSmiths, SeedSingers
Found among: The Attuned, in The Song Sanctuaries
Core Thread: Spirit, for both known callings
The WeftBorn are Threadlings born to a calling: an innate gift, in service of the Great Weave in all its complex, subtly balanced functions. They are not a species, and they are not a faction. A WeftBorn Threadling is born into their calling, the way other Threadlings are called to a trade or a coven, and it runs through them like the weft runs through a cloth.
The name follows the plain pattern of Threadbare's faction and group names: the Observists observe, the Obscurists obscure, and the WeftBorn are born to the weft (see Naming Conventions).
- SongSmiths - WeftBorn architects of music. A SongSmith forges, binding raw Spirit into lasting Song: composition sturdy enough to outlive the moment of its singing and be carried, note for note, across generations. In the Song Sanctuaries their work is counted a form of Weave-mending in its own right.
- SeedSingers - WeftBorn cultivators who sing the living world into being. Where the SongSmiths forge lasting Song, the SeedSingers work smaller and closer to the soil, shaping each SongSeed with the Spirit sung into it before it is planted, to grow food, medicine, textiles, dyes and more.
Both known callings are found among the Attuned of the Song Sanctuaries, where Spirit is abundant, though Spirit is not exclusive to the Sanctuaries.
- A calling, not a club. No one joins the WeftBorn or is recruited to them. A calling is something a Threadling is born into, and a Threadling's region, family and faction sit alongside it.
- Spelling. Always WeftBorn, with a capital B, as a group and as a description (a WeftBorn cultivator).
- New callings. Only two callings are canon so far. New callings, in the Song Sanctuaries or beyond, should be raised in GitHub Discussions before they are written into a StoryQuest.
