perf(web): streaming a reply no longer re-renders the whole chat view - #20961
juliusmarminge wants to merge 1 commit into
Conversation
ChatView subscribed to the live thread projection, so every streamed chunk re-rendered it and the chrome under it. It now reads a quiet projection that holds while a chunk only grows already-streaming text. LiveMessagesTimeline is the one reader of the live items. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
ApprovabilityVerdict: Needs Human Approval Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR substantially refactors production chat rendering and shared thread-state subscriptions, adding a live timeline path while suppressing streaming updates for several existing consumers. The scope and runtime impact extend beyond a small isolated optimization, so human review is appropriate. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

Preserve draft timeline remembering during thread switches.
draftTimelineEntries is used for non-server threads, but LiveMessagesTimeline remembers entries only for server threads. A draft can therefore fail to become the held timeline used while switching to another thread that is still loading.

Reject non-append streamed updates.
sameApartFromText treats every pair of nonempty streaming texts as growth. ACP replaceText can replace or shorten the current assistant or reasoning text while keeping streaming: true. The predicate then keeps the old quiet projection, so quiet consumers can retain obsolete content. Require the new text to preserve the previous text as a prefix.

Measured in the app before merging. I used seeded data on the same base 13aa882 and took the median of 3 runs per side, with the Claude Haiku thread open while streaming over a 12 s window.
No win. The websocket tap shows only about 1 Closing this rather than merging complexity with no measured benefit. I'll fix the |
ChatView subscribed to the live thread projection and visible turn items, so every streamed chunk re-rendered the whole chat view: the header, composer, banners and controls under it, not just the message being written.
ChatView, GitActionsControl, QueuedRunsControl and ThreadRelationshipsControl now read a quiet projection (
quietThreadAtom/quietVisibleTurnItemsAtom). It keeps its previous value while a chunk only grows the text of an assistant or reasoning entry that is already streaming and already has text. Any other change passes straight through, including a new item, the first text, streaming: falseor another field.LiveMessagesTimelineis the only reader of the live items, so a chunk renders the timeline only. Thread find reads the live projection only while its bar is open. Checkpoint summaries read the quiet projection.Tested by
