- Per email to list, we are on the WG AG agenda for next week. The review period is extended a week, providing some flexibility today.
- Start with usual standing agenda for first half of call.
- Conversation about guidance around Audio Description guidance.
- We are okay for next week, but we do need members to tackle Issues and draft PRs.
- WCAG 2 Backlog TF review of Label in Name Algorithm #4312 was flagged a couple of weeks. PR is fairly dense, but please provide input. This is also a topic for facilitators call.
Restyle figures and captions #4276 now is very nice! Change may still need further input, and should checked for compatibility with other uses of figcaption on the WAI site. Question also raised if contrast for vertical could be 3:1. Moved to Ready for approval.
Mike used his recent comment to Issue 1768 to lead a conversation on Audio Description and we discussed new PRs to try to better align the guidance across 1.2 Time-base media SCs. The PRs are created in series, building off one another. This makes it easier to consider each proposed change in isolation, as well as relatively easy to incorporate wholly or in part.
Update audio-description.html #4323 adds the word "important" to Note 3 to match the wording of the definition of audio description (which reads "..to describe important visual details...").
Audio description Understanding covers "important" visual content #4324 makes two changes to the first note in the informative Understanding document. Adding "important" (to match definition of AD) and swaps out the word "provided" in preference for the "conveyed".
Removed 1.2.7 reference from note 1 #4325 removes 1.2.7 mention from Understanding for 1.2.3/1.2.5 Understanding. There was some discussion that note is helpful for extended audio description. Mike will revisit.
Update media-alternative-prerecorded.html #4326 removes irrelevant (but numbered) note, then changes to bullet rather than number (since now there is only one note).
Meeting audio description through existing narration #4327 revises Understanding Note 1 to confirm that (existing) narrative audio can be used to pass Audio Descriptions and create a new technique for “providing audio descriptions” in the existing soundtrack. Not a true build, but a raw.GitHack preview is available for the new technique.
Mike also working on an audio description decision tree and would appreciate feedback. Decision tree might best be added to 1.2 Guideline as it is not a clean fit to Understanding and uses "not applicable" which, per WCAG2 conformance model, is a pass. We all agree that it's better when presenters are verbose and don't say things like “as you can see here” without pausing.
Tweak understanding for 1.2.3 and 1.2.5 #1790 is earlier draft from Patrick on audio description to address lack of pauses in dialog as an excuse (i.e., pass the SC) — which does not sit well with most access professionals. Mike pointed out that between pauses in dialog and important visual information might not correlated, but that is what is needed for AD. Mike reports having good success with getting producers to be more mindful of AD, which is traditionally a post-production activity. Trimming out pauses (in dialog) is about the same amount of work as dubbing over pauses. There is more recent conversation in that thread, starting with AWK comment.
